Course description:
In this course, students will examine how observations and assessments are used by educators to identify children’s skills, abilities and interests, and to determine the effectiveness of early learning and care programs and plan effective curriculum. Students will examine and utilize a variety of observational tools to facilitate assessment and planning. Observation strategies and recording objective anecdotal notes will be emphasized across the broad spectrum of developmental domains in early childhood. The course will also include the opportunity for students to observe and engage with young children individually and in small groups in an early childhood classroom, using formal and informal assessment techniques to build relationships with children, determine children’s strengths, and suggest play-based support activities.
