Luke Charpentier Memorial Fund

Established in memory of Luke Charpentier in 2015, the Luke Charpentier Memorial Fund Scholarship was established to assist post-secondary or trades students from the City of Yellowknife with their studies. To be eligible, individuals must be residents of the City of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT), pursuing post-secondary education or trades training in any field, and must demonstrate these guiding values for the fund: the qualities of compassion, kindness, generosity, of being a positive influence on their peer group, and demonstrating sportsmanship and a love of the outdoors. Organizations from the City of Yellowknife with projects that benefit the community are also eligible to apply and so the scholarship is not awarded to a student every year.

Successful applicants are eligible to reapply for scholarships in subsequent years; however previous receipt does not guarantee future awards.

Preference will be given to applicants that reflect the guiding values of the fund as set out above.

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • The essay or written statement reflecting the guiding values for the fund,
  • Community involvement, volunteering, and other achievements for scholarships,
  • Willingness to be involved in promotional activities in relation to this scholarship or grant.

Scholarship applications must include:

  1. A written statement of no less than 300 and no more than 500 words outlining how their past activities reflect the guiding values set out above.
  2. A letter from their school or a coach attesting to their being worthy of consideration for this award.
  3. Proof of acceptance into a post secondary or trades program.
  4. A Proof of Residency (PDF 176kb) form must be submitted along with the application.

Lena Gosselin Memorial Fund

Established in memory of Lena Gosselin in 2019, the Lena Gosselin Memorial Fund was established to support individuals seeking training in the area of executive office administration and management with a continued interest to work within the Northwest Territories. To be eligible, applicants must be a Northwest Territories (NWT) resident (minimum of two years); enrolled in an office administration/executive assistant program in the Northwest Territories or be currently in an administrative role, and must submit a personal essay: tell us who you are, personal accomplishments, indicate why such a program is of interest, motivation for entering the field, and career aspirations/interests/goals related to the Northwest Territories.

Applicants are eligible to re-apply for grants in successive years; however previous receipt does not guarantee future awards.

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

  1. The eligibility requirements noted above
  2. Enrolment in an office administration/executive assistant program in the NWT or in a current administrative assistant role.
  3. A written statement (500 words max) outlining:
    • The benefit they will obtain from the grant/scholarship,
    • Willingness to be involved in promotional activities in relation to this grant
    • Career aspirations for the future as related to office administration/management.

Applicants must include the following documentation with their completed application:

  1. Educational progress, copy of enrollment registration
  2. Name of current employer and supervisor with contact information

Jonas Konge Memorial Fund

Established in 2010 in memory of Jonas Konge, the Jonas Konge Memorial Fund was established to:

  1. Support NWT residents pursuing post-secondary studies in medicine or nursing, and
  2. Provide support to the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation to fund the purchase of new capital equipment or programs (approved and identified by the Department of Health of the GNWT) in the area of Pediatrics or Neonatal care. Grants will be designed to support new initiatives for the Stanton Territorial Hospital and or Government approved clinic settings and not to replace existing capital equipment.

Applications for the scholarship are open to individuals resident in Yellowknife (first priority) and other Northwest Territories communities for at least five years. To be eligible, an individual must be entering their second or subsequent year of post-secondary studies in medicine or nursing at a recognized College or University and be planning to practice in the Northwest Territories after they graduate. First priority will be given to applicants from Yellowknife and those studying Pediatrics or Neonatal care.

The deadline for applications is May 15 of each year. Applications must include a written essay of a maximum of 500 words on:

  • Why they are applying for the grant,
  • The qualities exhibited by the applicant in their chosen field,
  • How the scholarship will contribute to them achieving their goals.

Applications must also include:

  • Written confirmation of acceptance in the second year of post-secondary studies in medicine or nursing,
  • Information on the field of study being undertaken,
  • Two letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s involvement in the activities described and demonstrate the above-listed qualities,
  • A copy of the applicant’s most recent transcripts,
  • A Proof of Residency (PDF 176kb) form must be submitted along with the application.

Elaine (Sweet) Whitford Scholarship Fund

Established in memory of Elaine (Sweet) Whitford, the Elaine (Sweet) Whitford Scholarship Fund was established to support Northwest Territories (NWT) residents pursuing post-secondary studies in social work or nursing. Applications for the scholarship are open to individuals resident in the Northwest Territories for at least two years. To be eligible, an individual must be entering their second or subsequent year of post-secondary studies in social work or nursing at a recognized College or University.

Factors taken into consideration in reviewing grant applications from individuals include:

  1. An understanding of the important role they play in community development as a professional social worker or nurse,
  2. Community involvement,
  3. Commitment to social work or nursing, and
  4. Economic need.

First priority will be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry who have lived in the Northwest Territories for at least one-half of their lives; second priority will be given to other individuals who have lived in the Northwest Territories for at least one-half of their lives.

The deadline for applications is May 15 of each year. Applications must include a written essay of at least 500 words on why they are applying for the grant. Applications must also include written confirmation of acceptance in the second year of post-secondary studies in social work and nursing and documentation confirming residency. A Proof of Residency (PDF 176kb) form must be submitted along with the application.

Butler-Hushagen Health Education Fund

Established in by 2020 Rob Butler and Tannis Hushagen, the Butler-Hushagen Health Education Fund was established to support Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon residents pursuing post-secondary studies in a health-related field.

Prerequisites Applications for the scholarship are open to individuals who are a resident of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut or Yukon for a minimum of two years. To be eligible, an individual must be registered to attend a University, College or Technical Institute (e.g. SAIT) or an accredited program leading to a Degree or Diploma in a health-related field and planning on returning to the North after studies are complete.

Applications The deadline for applications is May 15 of each year. Applications must include a written essay of a maximum of 500 words on:

  • How they have demonstrated the academic ability to be successful in their chosen field,
  • How providing the scholarship to the applicant will benefit the north,
  • The applicant’s past/current involvement in and contribution(s) to their community,
  • Willingness to be involved in promotional activities in relation to this grant.

Applications must also include:

  1. Written confirmation of acceptance in a University, College or Technical Institute (e.g. SAIT) or an accredited program leading to a Degree or Diploma in a health-related field,
  2. Information on the field of study being undertaken,
  3. Educational transcripts for the most recent year of study,
  4. One letter of reference from a teacher, health care professional or community leader,
  5. A Proof of Residency (PDF 176kb) form must be submitted along with the application.

UNW Local 32 Student Citizenship Award

Value: $250 to $500

Applicants must be full-time Aurora College students at Yellowknife North Slave Campus in good academic standing. If two applicants are chosen, each will receive $250. If only one is chosen, $500 will be awarded. Applicants must submit the following:

  • A letter demonstrating or supporting your citizenship roles: participating and contributing to college life, helping others, community volunteer work, etc.
  • A letter of support from an Aurora College instructor.
  • A letter of support from a fellow college student.

Thebacha Campus Student Association Student of the Year Award

Value: $100 and a plaque

Awarded for outstanding leadership in student interests, issues, and activities. Any student who is in a full-time program (a six-month-plus program and having a 60 percent class workload) is eligible for nomination. Staff and students are able to nominate students for this award. Nominators must give a brief summary of reasons why they feel the student qualifies. The award is dependent on the voting results of the Thebacha Campus student body.

This award is by nomination by any Aurora College student member.

Yellowknife Community Foundation – Yellowknife Campus Scholarship

This Aurora College Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide support for students from Yellowknife attending the Yellowknife / North Slave Campus of Aurora College. Applicants must be registered in a second or subsequent year of study at the Yellowknife / North Slave Campus of Aurora College and have resided in Yellowknife for a minimum of three years, prior to applying for the award. Factors taken into consideration in reviewing grant applications include community involvement, commitment to the applicant’s program of study, and economic need.

Applicants must submit:

  • Proof of registration and attendance in a second or subsequent year of study in a degree or diploma program at the Yellowknife / North Slave Campus of Aurora College
  • Their program of study
  • Proof of Yellowknife Residency (PDF 176kb) for at least three (3) years.
  • A personal essay (up to 500 words) outlining the student’s involvement in activities that make Yellowknife a better community
  • Two letters of reference

Town of Fort Smith Academic Achievement Award

This award is presented at Convocation by the Town of Fort Smith to a full-time Thebacha Campus student who has had excellent attendance, excellent academic achievement, and has demonstrated community involvement.

SLR Consulting Bursary For 2nd Year Students

This bursary is available to students who are enrolled in the 2nd year of the Environment Natural Resource Technology Program. Applicants must be residents of the Northwest Territories. First Nations, Inuit or Metis students will be given priority. Preference will be given to applicants who have achieved a minimum overall average of 70% in their first year of the program. Applicants who can clearly demonstrate their commitment to the field of Environmental and Natural Resource through involvement in related volunteer and/or paid work and/or hobbies are also preferred.

Applicants must submit:

  • a 150-250 word letter of interest describing why you have chosen the field of Environment and Natural Resources Technology as your area of study, your past or current involvement in this field and what you have done to demonstrate your commitment to this area
  • where possible, a reference letter from an employer (paid or voluntary), instructor, or trainer
  • a completed application form
  • a transcript showing completion of 1st year ENRTP
