DESCRIPTION:C.O.R.E De-EscalationCreating Opportunities with Respect & Empathy \n\n\n\nIntroduction \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction Sequence\n\n\n\nTraditional lecture vs. skill based learning\n\n\n\nDe-escalation Overview\n\n\n\nGoals of the course\n\n\n\n\nPart I: Realizing Expectations \n\n\n\n\nBeing a professional brings expectations from:\n\nThe organization\, the public\, the media and the courts\n\n\n\n\n\nNatural reactions in the face of conflict – Fight\, Flight or Freeze\n\nExceptions are those who benefited from: great parents\, great mentors\, the Anvil of Experience (making mistakes) or effective training Experience Alone is No Guarantee of Success – Ericsson’s 10\,000 hr. principle\n\n\n\n\n\nIntergenerational Communication\n\nFor the first time\, we are seeing Grandparents working on teams that contain persons their grandchildren’s age. Dr. Mary Donahoe\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Impact of Technology on Interpersonal Communication\n\nVideo Technology has created a new reality\, the power of social media\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart II: It’s Not Personal! \n\n\n\n\nRationalizing the Irrational\n\nPeople under the influence of negative emotions can appear irrational\n\n\n\nTheir attacks can be very personal and offensive\n\n\n\n\n\nPeople Don’t Mean What They Say …\n\nWords and meanings can be (and usually are)\, completely different\n\n\n\nWe need to ignore the words and search for the correct meanings\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t Take the Bait – 80% of Complaints Stem from Our Reaction\n\n\n\nEGO Is the Enemy\n\nUltimately\, that voice in our head that makes us do and say things that we never planned on doing or saying!\n\n\n\n\n\nCompliance vs. Cooperation – Separating attitude from behavior\n\n\n\nThe Unanswered Question – the appropriate response to verbal resistance\n\n\n\n\nPart III: The Learned Response Confidence In Conflict – Confidence comes from skill acquisition and skill development Aristotle – ‘Audiences Are Made\, Not Found’ and the 3 Appeals Emotional Intelligence:Knowing who we are and what our role is (moral compass) Recognizing our emotions (and only perform the positive ones) Recognizing the emotions of others (empathy) Using this awareness to start building a relationship THE 93% RULE – It’s not what you say\, it’s how you say it! \n\n\n\n\nBreath! – Control your heart rate and prevent your emotions from ‘high jacking’ you\n\n\n\nC.O.R.E. Philosophy\n\nBy recognizing and controlling our negative emotions\, we can now perform only positive emotions. This mindset allows us to see opportunity in conflict as we endeavor to maintain the high ground by showing respect and diffusing the other with empathy\n\n\n\n\n\nPROFESSIONAL RESPECT\n\nPerformed respect forms the basis of a healthy relationship\n\n\n\n\n\nPROFESSIONAL EMPATHY\n\nEssential for diffusing a difficult encounter – empathy absorbs tension\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart IV: Communication Essentials \n\n\n\n\nActive Listening Revisited – Finding the meanings behind the words\n\n\n\nThe Power of Paraphrasing – the ultimate communication tool\n\n\n\nDigging Deeper – asking the appropriate questions at the appropriate time\n\n\n\nProviding Real Options – The essence of persuasion\n\n\n\n\nPart V: Practical Application \n\n\n\n\nPersonal Security Awareness\n\nImminent Jeopardy\n\n\n\nProxemics\n\n\n\n\n\nDe-escalation Phrases – demonstrate that you are listening – refocus the contact\n\n\n\nC.O.R.E. PROCESS\n\nIntroduction Sequence\n\n\n\nClarify – ask the $1\,000\,000 question\n\n\n\nEstablish Context– tactfully minimize resistance\, build upon credibility\n\n\n\nProceed OR Persuade – Verify\n\n\n\nConclude\n\n\n\n\n\nCase Study – application of C.O.R.E. techniques to actual events\n\n\n\nScenario Development – Practical application\n\nSkill building – Introduction Sequence with De-escalation phrases\n\n\n\nSkill building – Clarifying Sequence\n\n\n\nSkill building – Putting it all together\, no resistance\n\n\n\nSkill building – Minimal Resistance – persuasion\n\n\n\nSkill building – Medium Resistance – persuasion – Verify\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ethical Protector Creed and Closing Remarks\n\n\n\n\nDate:October 17 & 18\, 2024 \n\n\n\nTime:9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nCost:$550.00 \n\n\n\nInstructor:Darcy Pennock \n\n\n\nLocation:Online via Zoom
